ADAPTIVE BOOKS

As Internet use deepens, and as various disciplines rely more heavily on web resources, the textbook, professional, and self-help book industries need intermediate tools that can establish conventions across the industry but still maintain competitive advantages for each publisher.

The textbook, professional book, and self-help publishing industry has not seen enough evidence to support the development of an active tool(s) that meets the needs of students and professionals. Publishing houses have made tactical decisions to develop or license software tools, or to mount web pages, or give away videos or CD-ROMs. In almost every case, however, these add-ons are part of the marketing and maintenance of the core book property.

The Adaptive Book product allows publishers and end-users to expand out from the wealth of editorial development in an established book product by being able to “customize” the book for instructional and learning purposes. In turn, publishers and end-users can share the “alterations” to the book based on roles, and “add to” the book through embedded links to other content elsewhere on the web, network, or client machine.

Where a publishers presentation of books in digital form (textbooks, professional and self-help books) need to be pristine, secure and quickly accessible, fixed media provides viable display, protection and speed requirements. Transferring the digital content to DVD or CD-ROM, or downloading to a computer hard drive, provides immediate access. Allowing that content to be marked-up and to interoperate with other external content is accomplished via the Internet.

The Adaptive Book product uses a TextCentric Reader for display and navigation.

Where ubiquitous access and constant updating are necessary (periodic updates, supplementary material, web-based assessments, additional resources), the Browser-based Adaptive Book product is the answer to dynamic authority-based publishing. Now case studies, best practices, new discoveries, current affairs and cross-discipline material are simple to “insert” into the Adaptive Book.

As in all Adaptive Content Technology products, core and ancillary content can be marked-up and can interoperate with other external content and with other end-users via the Internet.

ATC Product Versions
The ATC product can be used in different versions, based on roles. Publishers or instructors can embed course pathways, annotations, and links. Students can add and share content, links, and annotations.
